Alguire Finishes Second in Sportsman Series Opener at Mosport

(Bowmanville, Ontario) - Mike Alguire and his A-Dor Construction / Huntington Motorsports Pontiac Grand Prix hit the track for the first time last weekend on the ½-mile oval at Mosport. The event was the opening CASCAR Sportsman race of the season, and Alguire plans on being in contention for the title all year long. "We have a great team, and solid equipment," explained Mike, who finished fourth in the championship battle last year, a mere one point out of second. "I think that we showed last year that we can get in a title race and take a shot at a championship."

The only way to describe the weather conditions on the Saturday of Father's Day weekend would be 'hot', and as the mercury climbed over 90 degrees during the afternoon, the team struggled to get the # 32 racer hooked up to the track.

Following the practice session, the cars lined up for qualifying, and Alguire was able to rip off the third-fastest time of the session, trailing only pole-sitter Dion Verhoeven and Steve Munro. "It was a good lap for us, but the track had changed so much since earlier in the day when we practiced."

The flag dropped on the main event Saturday night and Verhoeven was able to pull out front, with Munro second. Mike dropped into third, remaining mere feet off Munro's tail until lap 10 when Steve slipped up in turn three. Alguire pointed the nose of his Grand Prix to the bottom of the track and zipped by into second place. "Steve just made a mistake and I was there to capitalize on it."

Alguire set his sight on 2005 series champion Verhoeven next, and tracked down the leader. For the next 90 laps Mike put tons of pressure on Dion, but just couldn't make the pass. "I tried everything. I was better than him getting in the corner, but just wasn't good enough coming off. I tried lifting and getting the car turned earlier so I could get a run, I tried different lines, I tried everything, and he was just coming off so hard. He didn't make a mistake, and we had to settle for a second-place finish tonight."

Mike was also very pleased with the efforts of the Huntington Motorsports crew, "It was so hot, and the track changed all day long. It was tough to keep up with it, but my guys gave me a great car, and we were solid throughout the race."

1. Verhoeven, 2. Mike Alguire, 3. Munro, 4. Cole Weber, 5. Shawn McGlynn.

Point Standings unavailable as of June 20, 2006.

The next event for Mike Alguire and the Huntington Motorsports Team will be Canada Day weekend at Barrie Speedway. The CASCAR Sportsman cars will qualify for their 100-lap event on Saturday, with the feature going off Sunday afternoon followed by the Super Series 300-lap feature. "We had a solid sixth-place run there last year, and I think we can be a factor on Canada Day. I also went to college in Barrie, so I think we'll have a ton of our fans out to cheer us on. It's like my second home track."
